The latest person to head the communications team at the White House has a long list of anti-LGBTQ and racist remarks.
On Tuesday Kayleigh McEnany was named the administration’s newest press secretary — the fourth in a tumultuous governmental office that regulates the exchange of official information between the executive branch and journalists covering the White House.
She replaced Stephanie Grisham, who didn’t hold a single press briefing during her eight-month stint on the job.
McEnany, a 31-year-old Trump loyalist, first gained notoriety as a CNN commentator in 2016 as a fierce defender of then-candidate Donald Trump during the months leading up to the election.
The often soft-spoken Bible-loving conservative rising star was an all-out fighter for some of Trump’s most controversial views. Her loyalty to the president paid off, and in 2017 she was nominated to the high-profile position of spokesperson to the Republican National Committee.
Her nomination as the guardian and defender of the administration’s rhetoric, however, has alarmed LGBTQ groups, who were quick to point out a well documented long history of racist, homophobic and anti-transgender remarks.
“Throughout her career, Kayleigh McEnany has used her role as a commentator to attack LGBTQ people through the press,” Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD, said in a statement.
“Whether it be her opposition to marriage equality or her attacks on transgender people, McEnany has shown that she knows how to, and even enjoys using the media to spread dangerous, anti-LGBTQ messages to wide audiences,” she added. “Unfortunately, in her new role as press secretary, she will have the power to continue doing so, but now with the White House name attached to hers.”
GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy group, compiled a series of examples backing up Ellis’ claims.
McEnany, who has argued that the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality is a threat to religious rights, wrote in 2015, as the court prepared to hear the case on marriage equality, that marriage discrimination discussed by “the mainstream media” was nothing more than “a lot farcical blabber.”
“The case before the Supreme Court tomorrow is about something entirely different: the right of the state to define marriage, a right that has been in its constitutional domain since the inception of this republic,” she wrote.
Using her many appearances on cable news shows, she repeatedly spoke out against transgender bathroom access, using an argument that has been favored by anti-transgender conservative religious circles: allowing trans people to use the bathroom they choose somehow poses a threat to women.
“This could be utilized by some men, for instance, to go into female bathrooms, it’s happened at Target, which does have the same policy in place. Voyeurism issues where cameras were put by men taking advantage of the policies, not transgender individuals, men, straight men coming in and really being a predator against women,” she said in 2017.
Her attitude toward minorities, however, doesn’t stop with stop with sexual orientation or gender identity minorities.
Writing for the conservative news site The Blaze in 2013, she penned a piece entitled “21st century feminism: an embarrassment to my gender,” in which she writes that “the feminists of today reduce women to their sexuality, and in doing so, set women’s rights back by huge strides.”
During the heyday of birtherism, McEnany wrote a tweet that has recently gained a new life within Twittersphere.
“How I Met Your Brother,” she wrote sarcastically in August 2012. “Never mind, forgot he’s still in that hut in Kenya,” adding the hashtag #ObamaTVShows.
“Of course Donald Trump’s new White House Press Secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, is a racist birther,” Twitter user Gary Ray Betz wrote. “Would we expect anything less from a white supremacist administration?!”
